A TERRIBLE CRIME.

DUNEDIN, January 28

A horrible outrage was committed on a chi d, aged three years and a half, at St. Clair, late cn Saturday evening. Samuel Flaherty, aged twenty-five, lured the child among the sandhills, and brutally treated 1 her. A man named Cox caught Flaherty, and took him- to the •station. The child is in a- critical condition. Flaherty was brought before the Magistrate this morning, and remanded till Friday. He was hooted and groaned at by a large crowd, and after the proceedings the police took him away pri_ vately." He maintains silence, and affects insanity.
