ATHLETICS.

(BY ADVANCE.)

NOTICE TO SECRETARIES Secretaries of Clubs will please forward programmes, also results of meetings to “Advance,” P.O. Box 75. ~ FIXTURES—JANUARY. 30. —Dannevirke Athletic Club FEBRUARY. 6. —Takapau Caledonian Society 14.—Poverty Bay Caledonian. Society 30. —Caledonian Society’s Championship 29. —Thames Oddfellows Fete MARCH. 6.—Hunterville C.S. 27.-—Otaki Athletic Club. The prizes for the 129yds hurdles, 440 yards and one mile championships at Napier have been made optional, cash or gold medal. All competitors must be members ‘of affiliated clubs. A. W. Watts has written from Fielding to become a member of the Empire City Ath_ letics Club. He will take beating in the 120 yards hurdles. L. Ward will represent the club in the mile, in which he will be hard to beat. • The Empire City Athletic and Cycling Club opened their club rooms in the Exchange Buildings on Wednesday evening last with 'a smoke concert. There •were about 100 people present and the President (Dr Henry) occupied the Chair. During the evening the chairman presented the gold medal for the winner of the Club race at Johnsonville to Mr T. Paterson, who is about to depart in the Sixth Contingent for South Africa. The toasts were the Queen, the Empire City Athletic and Cycling -Club (responded to by Messrs Leslie and Shannon), the Wellington Cycling Club (responded to .by Mr D. M-cKenize) the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (responded to by Mr 4. M. Stuart), the Wellington Swimming Club (responded to by Mr T Shields), the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club (responded to by Mr. H.

Goodwin). Songs were contributed by Messrs F. and, E. D. Dunne, W. Young, G. Bowden, T. Carrig, and others. Mr McLaughlin presided at the piano. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close about eleven o’clock. The officials of the Caledonian Association championship meeting should exercise great care in the details in. connection with the ground so as any perfomances put up will not bei disputed. The ground should be laid out by a surveyor and competent timekeepers appointed. The hurdles should be of the regulation height and the hammer and shot weighed on the ground, as was done at Christchurch.. If convenient the; starter should attend at the ground and give the men some practise, also get used to the gun he is to use before 'the day. The Marist Bros. Old Boys sports, held alb the c pper ITutt on Anniversary Day, were held under the rules of the New' Zealand Amateur Athletic Association . W. G. Abbot, of Auckland, was scratch up to half a. mile- at the Mangaweka sports on th 22nd inst. He was giving starts of 12, 22, 30 and 50 yards. The Karang-ahake Xhelivig and TouringClub hold a sports'‘meeting at M.ackay. tcnvn on the 29th inst, L. McLaehlan was on scratch in the 100, 220, 44*0 yards and half a mile at Wanganui. Somers was in receipt of lyd (100), lyd (220), 2 (400yds) and 20yds (half-mile). R. A. Gilchrist 3yds, ’6yds, and Byds. The Cheltenham-Kiwitea sports club have decided to hold their annual sports meeting on March 6th. which will clash with Hunterville. The annual general meeting of members of the Waverley Athletic Association takes place this evening. A good deal of dissatisfaction has been expressed at the manner in which the programme of the Caledonian Societies’ Championship Meeting has been drawn up. It is unreasonable to expect pro. runners to compete for medals, which is the first prize offered for the mile, 440 yards and 120 yards hurdle championships. If the value of the medals (£5) were added to the handicap events and made championships they would be worth competing for. It ;s hardly fair to ask champions to run for medals, when second raters can win £8 and £lO in handicap events. There is also £lO put into an amateur handicap that should have been given to the cash men. Could the persons who drew up the programme reasonably expect to see a £lO cash handicap on an amateur championship on any amateur pro-

gramme. Including the amateur handicap and] the value of the medals, £9l is at present given for athletic events. The rules there shall be seven championship events, prizes for which could be £7, £4 and £2 for each event, making a total of £9l. There is no reason for offering; medals, instead of their value, because championship certificates are issued to: each successful competitor. I understand Mr R. Smith (secretary of the N.Z.C.S.A.) and the Dannevirke and Empire City Atliletic Clubs have protested against the manner in which the programme has been drawn up. A sports meeting w ±j. he held at Alfredton on St. Patrick's l Ray. A-meeting of delegat es of clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Caledonian Societies’ Association will be held at the Masonic Hotel, Napier, on Thursday, February 21st, at 8 p.m. At the Maryborough (Vic.) sports on New Year’s Day, W. McManus (loyds) won the half-mile in 2mins. At Sydney, on the 4th inst. McManus won the 100 yds professional championship of New South Wales: in 10 sec. During the high jump- contest at the Palhiaitua. sports on Wednesday last. Troy apparently nettled because he could not negotiate the bay openly offered to back himself against the leading man for a “OWd-” The challenge was accepted by IMi 'vV. Miller ? one of the officials who handed his “quid” to the President, Mr J. R. Wilson. Troy also handed his “quid” to the President. Then another and another “quid’” was handed in. The contest was delayed, and it suddenly dawned upon, the principals, connected with the wager that their actions were scarcely justifiable under the circumstances. k e money was handed back to iuie -several parties, the action receiving ■the approval of a large section of the onlookers.

At the Pallia tut snorts on Wednesday last L. McLuchlan won the 220yds Handicap from scratch in 22sec.s ; the 440yds from scratch in 50 2-sth sec ; and ran second in his heat of the 100yds off scratch to Brandon (6yds) in lOsec. At the Pahiatua sports, a- variety show under canvas clamoured during'the day for public support, but did poor business despite the fact that two modest female artists displayed themselves outside the tent, dressed in tights. The sigh was not. apreciated by the great'bulk‘"of the public. Attached ipo this exhibition was the usual boxing artist, who invited any and everybody who thought fit, to walk right in and have a. bout with the gloves. Little boxing business was done.
