English scientific papers describe the immense preparations made for measuring the form of the earth. An arc is to he measured by the French over the equatorial regions of South America, extraordinary precautions being taken to eliminate former sources of error. At the same time an arc is to be measured in the Arctic regions by the Russians and Swedes. Sir David Gill, astronomer at the Gape, will measure the arc of a meridian in connection with the extension of the telegraph system from the Gape to the Nile, The return of the bankruptcy business transacted in the Wellington district during the quarter ending December 31, 1900, is now available.
