■ Sir Walter Besant took his first rebuff from publishers with rare philosophy. When his earliest novel, of three volumes, was returned by a well-known London ftinr, he promptly placed his pile of manuscript on the fire, and saw the fruits of a year’s work consumed without a sigh.
