POLITICS AND POISON
A CANDIDATE: DRUGGED'. MONTREAL. Monday, Nov. 5. A sensation has been caused in Quebec by the news of an attempt made to poi_ .son Mr Alphonse Bernier, th© Conservative candidate for Montmagny County, by cocaine at a joint meeting held at St. Pierre on Sunday after mass. The cocaine was placed in a glass of water from which Mr Bernier drank, and the result was that he was unable to proceed with his speech. Tie was .removed to a neighbouring hence, where he received medical attendance, and 'the doctor who was called declared that the candidate had been drugged. The bottle which contained the cocaine was found on the floor of the hall. The guilty parties are .said; to be known, and will be arrested. In connection with the electoral contest the police have arrested here four men who are officers of two alleged political clubs, the membership of which was represented to be composed of working men. One club was conservative and the other Liberal, so they got subscriptions from citizens of both parties. The Liberal list, which was found hi the possession of the secretary of the Conservative club, contained the name of Sir W. Laurier for ten dollars. The Conservative subscriptions amounted to 2000d015., including a donation of twlently-five dollars from Sir Charles Tupper.
