A boiler tube burst on the French warship Decidee at Taku, killing one man and seriously injuring another. An elderly*- man of miserly appearance who owned property on both sides of the Mersey, was sent to gaol for begging in the streets of Liverpool. He obtained coppers from passers-by on the plea that he Pad not a penny to pay his fare across the river. A Scotsman who has just died in Queensland, poor and in receipt of hospital relief, once came near being a very rich man. He sold for £640 land upon winch gold mines were afterwards discovered, and these have paid over* £3,000,000 in dividends alone. A man was sentenced to fourteen days' hard labour at Spalding for sleeping in a stable. He would not work, and had been several times convicted. The police stated that there was £6O waiting for the man at a solicitor's, but he was too lazy to fetch it. J At Liverpool women are employed as tramway clerks, working eight hours a day and being paid twelve or fourteen shillings a week. Those who work five hours on Sundays are entitled to have one weekday whole holiday instead. There is very keen competition for these positions, and recent vacancies for twenty clerks attracted over a hundred applicants.
