On Tuesday, February 20tli, tbe London “Times ’ will permanently withdraw. its “Encyclopedia Britannica” proposition. The time which brings to an end the cmnortunity for securing tile iull set of this great reference library on payments of one guinea a month, offereci,; tp..;,re§i*)eHYy ph. New „Zealand, was necessarily limited, as announced when the proposition was first published. •• The “Times’ i egrets 'that it hiust close an enterorise which proved to be mutually beneficial in a marked degree, hut with the regret comes a feeling of satisfaction that it- has been able to further the cause of education by sending to so many nomes the twenty-five volumes of what is acknowledged to be the broadest and greatest literary work of the century—the “Encyclopiedia Britannica.”
From first to last nothing but words of approval and encouragement have been heard regarding the educational enterprise forwarded by the “Times,” and letters of commendation from all classes of society have been received. Tuesday, February 20th, is the last day on which the. “Encyclopiedia. Britannica can be secured on the liberal terms embodied in the offer.
It is needless to enlarge on the merits and value / of the Britannica.. The work is too well known, it has been the standard reference library for too many years to require any flambuoyant praise. There is this to say, however, the “Tunes” has made Encyclopiedia Britannica household words, for prior to the uay the Encyclopiedia proposition was * announced the work was to -be found, only in the libraries of the wealtny classes, colleges and schools. To-day it is in the homes of many hundreds of the residents of New Zealand, and its perusal there must prove a continual source of pleasure and profit to all members o.f the household:
