FINE FOR ASSAULT.
INVERCABGILL, Tuesday. At Riverton to-day George Webb was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment for pushing Mildred Callaghan from her bicycle on the road near Fairfax. : It was stated in evidence tuat he knelt beside her, caught her hands and made ah attempt to interfere with her dress. She pulled his whiskers, and he let go. .."When summoned, Webb told the constable that he pushed the woman off because she came close to him, and was riding without a light. In evidence the defendant said the affair was accidental. He was near-sighted, and did not see her coming She ran into him and fell, and he picked her up. That was his reason for taking hold of her hands. He alleged that the mother of the prosecutrix, when she came to him to ask an. explanation, brought two men with her, and that they assaulted him. The defendant's father gave evidence that when his son returned home his face was covered with blood.
