AUSTRALIAN FRUIT TO NEW ZEALAND.

A.few days ago it-'was announced from Auckland that a number, of cases of Sydney oranges, and lemons 1 we're riot-allowed* to be landed therej b'ecausey it- was alleged, they were infested with what the Inspector had described <l s "red scale." It would appear from the cablegram we published yesterday, morning that the information sent to Sydney about the matter" lias created a misunderstanding. "Red scale" had been telegraphed as "red spider," and that wasf construed to mean the "brown miteV to which the Agricultural Departriient in this colony takes no exception. . Now it turns, out that the cases of fruit condemned bore the stamp pf the New South Wales Government, and were .accompanied ,by a certificate declaring that the fruit v had been-fumi-gated at Sydney with hydro-cyanic acid. It is possible that some cases may- have escaped treatment, although that is considered far from probable, and the: entomologists both in Victoria and Queensland -have written stating that they had examined fruit from New South Wales treated in the manner described, and had never found it to have been infected with live scales. If the -New South Wales Gyovennmen/t authorities did not allow any cases to pass, then the matter may, on fuller information being received; be satisfactorily explained. •' : J] ;
