Among shipping folk the interest in the mishap to the steamer Waikato seems to some extent to have died out. The reason may be that all has been said that can be said on the subject. The steamer is now 147 days out from London, it is 115 days since her tail-shaft broke, and 56 days since she was last spoken by the barque Aalborg, now in Wellington. With these facts in view, the Waikato's case assumes a very serious complexion, and the thought may occur to readers that if the vessel can drift helplessly about in. the vast Southern Ocean for 115 days without being picked up, it is difficult to say how long the vessel may still drift about undiscovered. Surely a systematic search ought to be organised, as was done for the Perthshire. This is not only due to those on board, but should he done by way of abating the anxiety of their friends and relations on shore.
