SIGNALMAN'S SENSATION.
RELEASE OF MILES. AUTHOR OF ASHFIELD ACCIDENT. SYDNEY, Saturday. Henry J. Miles, formerly signalman at the Ashfield railway station, in the suburbs of Sydney, who was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment for attempting to wreck a train, has been released under the First Offenders Probation Act. [ln August Miles pretended to have "saved" the Melbourne-Sydney express train from disaster by discovering a piece of iron fastened across the line. It was subsequently found that he had himse'f laid the obstruction in. order to have an excuse for stopping the train, out of a desire for notoriety.] Mr H. F. David, Lieutenant R.N.R., late chief officer of the Delphic, has been appointed chief officer of the magnificent new White Star liner Afric, which was to have left Liverpool for Australian ports on the 7th inat.
