LICENSING IN DAY OF ISLANDS.
SLY-GROG SELLING IN THE DISTRICT. AUCKLAND, Saturday. The Bay of Islands District Licensing Court commenced its sittings yesterday at noon, and concluded at midnight. The applications of twenty-seven licensed houses in the district were all granted wih the exception of a license to the Waima Accommodation House, which is situated three miles from Kaihu, and the Masonic Hotel at Kawakawa, which were adjourned. After hearing the application for a house at Hohoura, twenty-five miles from A wan ui, what might be termed a great fight for a hotel at Kaihu took place. This was vigorously opposed by Mr M. A. McLeod, solicitor, of Dargaville, and the police. A large number of witnesses on both sides were examined. A petition for the house in question, signed by .250 people, was handed in. The Rev Mr Gittos and others spoke against the new introduction, but in the opinion of the majority of the Bench it was thought better to grant the application, and so sweep away extensive sly-grog selling.
