SPAIN AND HER COLONIES.
THEIB CESSION TO GERMANY. AIADRID, Saturday. The Queen-Regent Maria Christina, when addressing the Spanish Cortes, stated that it was now considered inexpedient to retain the remaining colonics belonging to the kingdom. The Queen proceeded to say that Sonin had offered to cmle to Germany the Caroline Islands, the Pelew Islands and the greater part of the Ladrcno Group. [Tlio Caroline Islands are a group in tho Western Pacific, lying between the Marshall and the Pelew Islands. They have an area of 270 square miles, and i\ population of 22,000. The Polcws, which are generally included in the Carolines, comprise 170 square mffe.s, and a population of 10,000. They came info possession of Spain over two hundred years ago. In 1884 the Germans Imisled their flag on the island of Yap, and this led to a sharp dispute with Spain, which was submitted to his Holiness the Pope to arbitrate upon. He decided in favour of Spain, but reserved to Germany special trade privileges. The united area of the Laclroncs, situated to the north of the Carolines, is 420 square miles. They were discovered by Magellan in 152 i. They have now a population of 10.000. All these islands are healthy and fertile. They are well-wooded, and produce rice, tobacco, sugar, cotton and indigo.]
