Mr W. G. Runcie has been appointed to be Auditor of Land Revenue in the Department of Lands and Survey. At the City Council last week the following clauses of the Public Works Committee's report were discussed :—" That a second flight of steps bo formed at Mason'G steps, oppo&ite and similar to the ones now there, at an estimated cost of .£IOO ; and that the footpath at .the top of the northern side ot Woodward street be widened and improved in the manner suggested by the City bur-vf-yor in his report upon clause 10 of this committee's report of 20th May.". Councillor Bevine proposed that the money for a second flight of steps at Mason's step 3 should be provided for in the next year's estimates. Councillor Smith seconded this. There were mm; v he thought, which more urgently required the expenditure o£ the Corporation's money. Councillor Devine's amendment was carried, but the rest of the report referring to Woodward street Was agreed to.
