A LIVELY RACE MEETING.

Auckland, May 10. The annual meeting of the Otahuhu and Suburban Racing Club was held on the Otahuhu racecourse on Saturday afternoon. The attendance was small, and the arrange ments for the conduct of the meeting were of the most primitive character. There was n » grandstand, and a few planks raised from the ground did duty for judge’s box. Afterthe first race a dispute arose among the betting fraternity. It appeared that the members of Tatteraall’s Club had given £35 to the club for the sole right to wager on the course, bat several outsiders appeared on the scene and insisted on betting. This Tattersall’s Club members resented, and they asked the stewards to remove the offenders from the course, but tho police, doubtful of the club’ a authority, refused to interfere. A number <•£ disputes aro3e between the different partie i concerned, bat no ejections took place. Tho outcome was that Tattersall’s Club members did not wager after the first race had been ruu,*and, in consaquence, a large number of horses on the course did not start for the r engagements. The Maiden Hurdle Race was the cause of a great dispute, it being alleged that only ono horse completed the course. Mr Bowman, the owner of Outlaw, entered a protest against Kia Ora, who finished first past the post, for running off and crossing Outlaw at tho last hurdle. Mr A. McMillan also entered a protest against any of the starters being awarded tho race except Rataplan, it bei g alleged that he was tho only horse which jumpod the hurdle at the first bend. The stewards considered tho protests, and decid d to run the race off again, with the result th at Kia Ora, ridden by R. Collins, again won. ft may be mentioned that the distance of the race was contrary to tho rules of racing. In tho Pony Cup, Bird, the rider of Lena, lost his seat, and fell just after passing the winning - post, through a stirrup bren icing. He was picked up in a semi-conseio is condition, when it-was found his head and face were bruised and his back and shoulders hurt.
