The employment of Lascar labour in the British mercantile marine is evidently increasing, some of the more recent steamers to substitute coloured for white sailors and firemen being several of those flying the flag of the “ Gulf” line. One of these steamers, the Gulf of Mexico, arrived alongside the Australian Wharf (Melbourne) from London the other day with a decidedly dusky human equipment, there being in all 45 of a native crew on board.
