FRIENDLY SOCIETIES AND TRUST FUNDS.
A deputation, consisting of Messrs A. Orr and Haslam, waited upon the Hon W. Hall.JTones last week to ask him to extend tbe scope of the Commission which has been appointed to enquire into the working of the private benefit societies of the colony, so .as to embrace the friendly societies. Some very serious allegations were made, which we find it impossible to publish. Ihe Minister gave the deputation an attentive hearing, and promised to call upon the Registrar for a full explanation in regard to rthe matter. Tbe charges made were, he .said, undoubtedly serious, but they were more for the societies themselves to deal with than a Royal Commission. He had already been approached and asked to have .an enquiry made iuto alk-gatimq; as to the excessive dues which it was stated were demanded by somj lodges. He intended that a commission sh .uid be set up presently to enquire into the state of friendly societies o-enerally, but it would be separate and distinct from the commission in respect to .private benefit societies already set up.
