THE ANGLIAN IN A GALE.

Auckland, May G. The steamer Anglian arrived at 5 a.m. to-day from Sydney, after a protracted passage of six and a half days. As anticipated, she fell in with the recent gale in the Tasman Sea. The. wind did not shift round the compass as in the case of the Bellinger, but blew steadily from the south, the whole time. Captain Hood reports that the steamer left Sydney at 6 p m. on the 29th ult., and met the full force of the gale the first night out. So heavy was the sea that the steamer was hove-to for 12 hours. The gale continued for the next two days, raising a high confused sea, and a good deal of water broke on board. * The Anglian, however, steamed straight through it, and came ©ut of the storm without sustaining any damage. Coming down the coast a partial disarrangement of the engines occurred, and the vessel had to come under easy steam, making about eight knots an hour. A concert held on board on Wednesday evening in aid of the Napier Flood Belief Fund realised £3 6s 7d. Mrs Frew, one of the passengers, gave birth to a daughter on the passage across. The child is to be named Henrietta Anglian. The horse 3 which were on board have all been landed in good condition, none the worse for the rough voyage. -
