THANKS TO THE PARROT.
Next to a monkey probably comes a parrot in point of uselessness. A parrot is amusing, and that is all ; but here is a story about a parrot that was instrumental in capturing a thief.
Victor Chevalier was a noted criminal in Paris, and the police were looking for him. M. Gorou, the then head of the Paris criminal department, himself engaged in the search, and going one day into the rooms of a notorious receiver of stolen goods, he heard a parrot cry—- “ Good old Victor ! there you are 1” This was enough for the detective, and having satisfied himself that the loquacious bird was the property of the man for whom he was looking,’ he searched the premises, and found a letter from Victor, saying that lie was in Angers. Thither M. Gorou went with the parrot, and stationed himself in a comer of the post office. Presently there entered an old man, looking like anybody but Chevalier, but the parrot shrieked out, *• Good old Victor 1 there you are !” and in an instant the detective had the handcuffs on his prisoner.
