Mr Chambeilain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, intends to appoint a Com-' mission to enquire into the critical position of the West Indian sugar trade, and devise a remedy for its depressed condition. The patent rights of Bovril extract of meat, which were lately bought by one of the Dunlop tyre millionaires for two millions sterling, are being floated into a company with a capital of two and a-half millions, the whole of which is to be issued to the public. The press of Berlin insists that the German Government should not allow the proposed British expedition to proceed up the River, as it would prejudice national interests.
President Kruger has expressed regret at Dr Jameson's illness.
Mr Cecil Rhodes has subscribed .£SOOO towards the erection of a memorial to the victims of the Matabele rebellion. THE PQWERSTND AFRICA. Rome, November 23. It isj understood that if the Italian colony Erythrea, on the shores of the Red Sea, is evacuated, the towns of Massowah and Kassala will be given up again to the Egyptian Government.
Rome, November 24. A strong agitation is afoot that Italy should abandon Erythrea. The Duke of Sennoneta is supported by two parties in the Triple Alliance, who warned King Humbert that they would be unable to support Italy in Africa even when legally in the right.
London, November 23. General Kitchener, Sirdar of the Egyptian army, has sailed for Egypt. Prior to his departure, he had a long consultation with the War and Foreign Offices.
Berlin, November 23. The Berlin Post states that Captain Lorgen, of the Prussian Grenadiers, is proceeding to the Soudan to take up a military position, but it is said to be in a private capacity. The Emperor gave him audience, and sent his greetings to the Sirdar.
Pakis, November 24. Owing to strong foreign pressure, France, after massing troops on the frontier, has abandoned the expedition to Twat, Morocco.
