THE CHILDREN'S FETE.
More than 4000 children were present at the fete at the Newtown Park on Saturday. Tho weather was perfect, and the Park a very paradise of delight to town children, covered as it was with new mown hay, with which they could pelt one another to their heart's content. The members of tbo committee were indefatigable in their efforts to make the fete a success, and the thanks of the parents of those children who attended are due to Mesdamos Veitch, Petherick, Bannister, Dudfield, Crabb, Pettit, Boxall, ©happle (treasurer), Miss XiOckie (secretary), the Kevs Baumber, Evans, Ward and Tisdall, and Mr C. M. Luke for their good work. The Mayor and Mrs Fisher were present during the day. Mr Ward took charge of the tea-boiling part of tho proceedings, and a splendid tea-boiler he proved. The Rev C. Tisdall and Mr C. M. Luke formed themselves into a sports Management Committee, and under their guidance the youngsters tried their powers at running, and many a budding athlete came away with his heart gladdened by some toy which he had won during the afternoon. Each child on coming on to the ground at 12 o'clock was presented with a paper bag containing sandwiches and sweets, and the rapidity with which huge piles of these parcels disappeared was alarming to watch. The funds raised for the purposes of the fete amounted to «£6O by subscriptions, and JB3O obtained by the Dramatic Students at the performance of " The Magistrate," and tho committee wish to thank both the students and private subscribers for generous donations. Altogether tho committee are to be congratulated on tho succesa of the day's outing. Tho sight from the hill overlooking tho Park was a novel and interesting one. Somoone asked the question : " Could wo return in 30 years, what would we see?" Very few of those children ever gave a thought to that question, nor would it matter if they had.
