Phelan, Al2 7s Gd, to be paid in a fortnight, or a month’s gaol. A man named Thomas William Gicse was arrested at Feilding for failing to provide his wile and children with adequate means of support. When brought before Mr Greenfield, S.M , at the Wellington Pity Court last week he pleaded not guilty. After hearing the facts and receiving an intimation from defendant of his willingness to pay Al a week the Bench decided to adjourn the case for one month in order to see if this amount will bo paid regularly. At the City Court on Friday, Thomas A. Barton was charged with failing to provide for his family, the sum of A2L being now duo ou an old order. His defence was thai, he had not been able to comply owing to scarcity of work. Mr A. G. Johnson, secretary of the Benevolent Trustees, said defendant’s wire bad been in receipt of aid from the institution, the Trustees of which had ordered the revival of the old order owing to representations made as to defendant s drinking habits. If be could find money for liquor he could find it to support bis wife. Mr Greenfield, who presided, sentenced Barton to one month’s imprisonment. A charge of a similar nature was preferred against James Darinody, who was ordered to pay up arrears due within a week. Two youths named Herbert Furness and John Anderson pleaded not guilty last week to a charge of having assaulted a Chinese named Ah Sue in Haining street. Mr Jellieoe appeared for the prosecutor, and Mr Wilford for the defendants. The evidence of Sue was to the effect that the pair maltreated him in broad daylight, with the result that he sustained injuries which had to be attended to by a doctor. He was struck under the ear, on the left cheek, aud kicked on the leg. The case occupied considerable time, the cvidcnco given by Chinese witnesses requiring interpretation. The defence was that there was somo accidental bumping when they mat tlie Chinaman, who drew a pocket-knife and was promptly knocked down. Mr Greenfield, S.M., disbelieved defendants’ story, and entered up a conviction, Furness, who appeared to have had moot to do with the assault, being fined 20s, and Anderson half that amount. The costs totalled A2 iSs. Charles Broadbent, arrested on a charge of stealing a horse, valued A 5, from James John Patterson, at Manaia, was on Saturday remanded to that place. Albert Victor Edwards, brought up for the theft of a horse, saddle and bridle, the property of Arthur Ilaiiis, of the Upper Hutt, pleaded guilty m respect of the saddle and bridle, the charge in reference to the horse being withdrawn. Nothing was known of him previously by the police, and Mr Greenfield sentenced him to one month. , For deserting from their ship, the Kakaia, Thomas Goff and William Marlett, two seamen, were brought before the Stipendiary Magistrate on Monday. They were ordered to pay AL each as wages to substitutes employed during their absence, and to forfeit two days’ pay. At Court on Monday afternoon R. Mothes, of Petone, sued Thomas Riddler for A 22 10s, commission in connection with the sale of defendant’s property in Jackson street, Petone, in January last. _ After hearing some evidence the ease was adjourned until Saturday. Mr Bunny appeared for plaintiff and Mr Olivier for tho defendant. For drunkenness, Mary Cronin was committed to the State’s care for 48 hours on Monclay morning' by Mr GreonriMd, h.M., and Olivia Carnell (” With a record-list as long as your arm, your Worship "’), with no friends, and but ninepence in her pocket, got 24 hours. 5s alternative, for a similar offence ; and G. \V. Jackson, Habitual to tho habit also, received a sentence of one month.
