It is exactly three centuries ago since Rir Walter Raleigh planted the first Irish potato in the garden attached to Ins residence, Myrtle Grove, Youghal—where, by the way, he also smoked his first pipe of tobacco —and accordingly the introduction of the famous tuber into Ireland will be celebrated in Dublin in November. The potato has been enthusiastically sung by an Irish poet as “ The real gold of Ireland,” and the celebration will take the popular and education'll form of an exhibition and a conference, under rhe auspices ol the Irish Gardeners’ As-ceffi; ion.
A gentleman who has been over the Ardgowan lately lepcrts that the settlement is going ahead splendidly, evidences of successful cultivation being visible on all hands. He prophesies that from present appearances the settlement will be a pronounced success in a few years’ time.
