Messrs Levin and Co., Limited, have received from their agents, Messrs Dalgety and Co., Limited, the following cable message, dated London, the 11th November : —“ At the Antwerp wool sales there is a large attendance of buyers, and competition is animated, prices being 5 per cent, to 10 per cent, higher than the closing rates of the last London sales." The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) has received the following cable message from their London office :—Wellington mutton is worth 3d per lb. A. G. Taine and Co. report on the markets for the week ending 12th November Fat sheep—Only shorn sheep are now coming in, and some of really good quality have been sold. Prime wethers, lis to 12s Gd ; medium, 10a to 10s Gd; ewes, 9s to 10s. Store sheep—Very few offering, buyers are shy, but as the wool market is much firmer prices are inclined to harden. We do not see any occasion for sellers to fear the market too much, as sheep are still good property. Good wethers (sales), 7s to 8s ; ‘2-tooths. 5s to 6s; young ewes, with good percentage of lambs (sales), 9s to 10s. Fat cattle—Beef is easier, and cannot be now quoted at more than 17s Gd per 1001 b. Store cattle—Market is a little better in demand, but no advance in prices. Fresh-grown bullocks, £‘4 10s to £4 15s ; 2-year steers, £3 to £3 7s 6d; yearlings and 18 months, 35s to 455; good weaners, 26s to 30s. Dairy cattle —We have never seen the market quieter, and sales are difficult to effect; £7 is top price for a good young cow. Pigs—Market good and strong for all sorts. Slips, Gs to 11s; porkers, ISs to 235. Sheepskins and wool —All coining forward to on* weekly sale are eagerly snapped up, and price keeps up wonderfully well. We can still obtain for best green skins, 5s Gd to Gs ; 4s Gd to 5s for lighter, with pelts not so well cared for. Dry country sales, 5d to s*d and Gd for anything very special; .medium and half woolled, 4d to 44d. Property—Small town properties are the only kind in motion at present, the demand being principally for 5 and 6-roomed houses, and if in any of the streets within easy distance of the centre of city there are buyers for them if sellers are reasonable.

A. G. Taine and Co. report of their horse sale on Saturday:—The Australian cricket match proved too strong for us on Saturday, the attendance being very limited and the entries not numerous; quality fairly good and in some instances very good. The business done was comparatively small, and sales difficult to effect. Wellington horse-buyers are inclined to stick to their old values, but that won’t do. Horses can’t be bought for the money they formerly were, and buyers must learn that lesson. We offered three good draughts, but failed to reach owners' reserve, notwithstanding the scarcity. We offered and sold some unbroken spring cart and spring dray horses up to £l3 15s. The others sold were mostly aged sorts as usual. Unbroken horses don’t sell well in this city. We sold store pigs from 0s to 12s.

Mr Matthew Henry reports of his Palmerston sale :—A fair muster of both sheep and cattle came to hand, and by the close of the sale the public were present in considerable numbers. The tone of the market at auction was somewhat flat. Ultimately most of the stock changed bands at prices equal to late rates, with a somewhat better enquiry all round. Quotations as under : —Cattle —Light beef, £5 8s Gd ; 3-year steers, £4 ; 3to 4-year steers, £4 7s Gd ; weaners, 20s. Sheep—Fat wethers, 8s ; fat and forward ewes, 5s Gd, 5s 9d to Gs ; woolly hoggets, 8s Id to 8s Gd. Messrs Abraham and Williams report :—At Pahiatua on Tuesday we had rather shorter entries than usual of both sheep and cattle. The attendance was small and the demand for both classes unusually lifeless. The greater portion of the sheep were turned out unsold, but we disposed of the bulk of the cattle at prices somewhat lower than owners’ expectations. At Palmerston on Thursday the sheep were in short supply, but the pens were fairly well filled with cattle, principally grown steers. Whilst we cannot claim a material alteration in prices, except perhaps foryoung steers of good quality, the demand was undoubtedly better for both sheep and cattle, and we practically cleared the yards at quotations. We quote—At Pahiatua: Fat wethers (small), 12s Gd ; forward ewes, 8s Gd ; 2-year steers, £2 7s Gd to £2 14s; fat cows, £3 15s to £1 2s Gd ; yearling steers, 33s Gd; weaners, 27s Gd ; yearling polled Angus heifers, 325. At Palmerston : Fat and forward ewes (shorn), 5s Gd ; ewes and lambs, 5s 9d ; Lincoln ewe hoggets (in wool), 9s 5d ; dry ewes (shorn), 3s; 2-tooth wethers, Gs fid; store wethers, 7s 3d to 7s Gd; forward wethers (in wool), 11s 3d ; fat bullocks (small), £5 11s; fat cows, £3 15s to £4 3s ; forward bullocks, £4lls to £4 15s ; 3-year steers, £3 14s to £4 3s ; 2-year steers, £2 12s to £2 17s Gd ; yearling steers, 3Gs to 395; mixed yearlings, 30s to 31s ; weaners, 15s to 80s ; 2-year heifers, £2 to £2 Gs ; dairy cows, £3lss to £1 ss. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report for the week ending 13th November, 1896:—Wool.—Since the settlement of the American elections, this market has shown a decided improvement. Reports from Australia advise an increase of quite Jd per lb, while press cables from Home quote an advance of 5 per cent, as having taken place at the sales now proceeding at Antwerp. It is also reported that business in Bradford is very brisk. We have no local transactions to record, as all clips coining forward are being held for our first sale of the season, which takes place on 4th December, when we promise to have a large and representative catalogue to present to buyers, of whom we are informed there will be a full attendance. Sheepskins continue in brisk demand and realise prices fully Jd to 4d per lb in advance of the London equivalent. Transactions for the week have been very satisfactory. Quotations are for butchers’ green skins, extra prime, 5s 3d to 5s 8d ; prime, 4s Gd to ss; medium to good, 3s fid to 4s 3d ; pelts, 3d to 5d each ; country dry skins, fullwoolled, s*d to 5:Jd ; extra prime, Gd ; good, 4ld to 5d ; medium, 34 to 4Jd ; inferior and broken, lid to 3d per lb. Tallow.—There is a parcel offering. We quote :—Prime mutton, 15s to 15s Gd; good mixed, 14s to 14s Gd ; inferior, 12s to 13s per cwt. Frozen meat. —Latest London quotations are: Wellington mutton, 3d per lb. Hemp.—Market firm at a level of last week’s quotations. Grain —Since our last report this market has shown considerable firmness. Locally there is not much enquiry for milling parcels, as millers are fairly well stocked, having bought earlier in the season. There is a moderate demand for feed parcels, which we quote at for whole. 4s Id to 4s 3d, sacks extra, ex store Oats.—Good stout feed are very firm at 2s 4d to 2s Gd ; sacks in, ex store. Chaff. —There is still a good supply offering, with but little demand. Quotations are for prime heavy in oats 60s to Gss. sacks returnable, ex trucks or wharf. Potatoes —Supplies of old potatoes are almost exhausted, and, in consequence, values are still inclined to harden. Fungus is selling at 3d to 3|d per lb for clean, dry parcels. Wanganui, November 11.

Freeman R. Jackson and Co.'s Wanganui stock report: —Wo had a large entry of cattle for the Wanganui cattle. The bidding was dull, but we cleared out a number before the day closed. At the meeting of Dalgety and Company (Limited), Mr Dorax, the chairman arid managing director, stated that the losses on sheep during the year had rendered it necessary to write down values. The general business had been well maintained. At the Antwerp wool sales there is a large attendance, and competition is brisk at an advance of about 7 per cent, for River Plate and 5 per cent, for lamb’s wool, as compared with the September rates. Australian wool showed an advance of‘M per lb on the last London rates. The total quantity sold was IGG4 bales. At the wool sales 2300 bales have been sold at a fair advance since the close of the last series. The sales are chielly to American dealers. The rise in regard to River Plate wools has been maintained. There have been 11,720 bales offered, and 7630 sold. Sydney, November 13. Good competition at the intercolonial wool sales continues, and bidding is very brisk. Better classes of wool are distinctly firmer, and prices are up to a farthing dearer on the week.
