James Miller, commission agent, dropped dead in the street at 4.30 this afternoon, lie was seen to throw up his hands and fall down and, on assistance reaching him, he was found to be dead. Ho was known to have suffered from a weak heart. He was about 70 years of age and leaves a grownup family. His wife is at present absent in Napier.

Dunedin, November 16

The proposal to raise a- further loan for abattoir construction was carried at a poll of the ratepayers to-day. It was generally understood that the counting of the local option poll, taken on the same day as the general election, would not be attempted on the general election day. Mr Taylor, returning officer for Dunedin, intends to count the voting papers for local option, and hopes to be able to announce it and the result of the Parliamentary poll be~ tween 10 and 11 p.m. Christchurch, November 16.

At the Magistrate’s Court James Furness, a young man, charged with picking a lady’s pocket - and abstracting a purse of money valued at «£4, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
