A parcel of 28 Bank of New Zealand shares in the estate of the late George PaterBon were sold by Messrs P. R. Jackson and Co. a few days ago at Wanganui (says the Herald) for Is lid each. The shares have .£l6 13s 4d paid upon them and a further liability of £3 6s Bd. The price is a significant guide to the public opinion of shares that were once sold for as high as .£23 each with only £lO paid up on them. The Feilding Star quotes the following testimony of an ex-local resident (now in America) on practical Prohibition, taken from a letter which reached Feilding a day or two since:—"With regard to temperance affairs, no doubt you are aware that the next State to this is a Prohibition State, and, in fact, this city was originally in the State of Kansas, but has grown much larger on this side of the line ; but, of course, one can get as much to drink on the other side of the line as this. The saloon-keepers find it much cheaper to pay fines than license fees. The State is the worst in the whole Union from a business point of view on account of Populism, Prohibition, &c. They (the farmers) and others interested in any concerns cannot borrow money at any price, just because it's Kansas."

Mr James Hendorson, a well-known Volunteer at the Thames, who was second for the Rifle Championship of the Colony two years ago, was accidentally shot dead last Monday through his gun exploding whilst he was out shooting. Hendorson was 2G years of age, and very popular. 4 sad feature of the lamentable occurrence is tha,t he was to have been married shortly.
