AN HOUR WITH THE SALVATIONISTS
On Monday afternoon Newtown avenue was the scene of an up-to-date foundation ; stone laying and volley-firing Salvation Army rally on the occasion of the visit of ! Hngadier Hoskin. \ The foundation stones were not anyI where near the foundation, nor were they lof stone, but that made no difference. Tho j proceedings were commenced by a short I and hearty service conducted by Brigadier | Hoskin, and tho beautiful solo "Calvary" j was rendered by Captain Mackay. Brigadier Hoskin, in his opening address, said | that foryears past they had been labouring j to obtain a meeting-house at Newtown, and ! he felt great gratification and pleasure in ! being able to announce that they had j made a substantial beginning. The building which they saw before them would 'cost over £ 100, and fhe land upon which 'it was built over £IOO. Tho draining, 1 asphalting and other expenses had j amounted to £55, and tho total ccstthoy | would incur amounted to £SOO. Tho 1 dimensions of tho building were 50ft x j 25ft. Brigadier Hoskin called upon Brother j Collyer to lay the first memorial " block." | After performing that arduous and difficult. ; task in a dexterous and workmanlike I manner by sticking the bloc*ir in i the wall, Mr Collyer thanked his j friends for allowing him the honour, ; and then Mr Hoby put in the next one. He said that, although he did not agree j with .-erne of their methods, he was at ono j with them in their principles. Mrs Tonics, in the absence of her husband, laid tho ! third, and Captain Edwards then callod upon Brigadier Hoskin to lay the last I block, which he did amid great volloyj firing. Contributions and promises to tho I amount of £l9 12s were received, and a j collection was taken up which brought the ' amount to over £SO before the proceed--1 ings terminated. Judging from tho number of volleys tlint were fired, ammunition must now bo at a premium in Wellington.
