Tho strike is for tho timo being overshadowed by a subject which is engaging the attention of colliery proprietors—tho question of tho fires arising from spontaneous combustion on board Newcastle coal-laden ships. Prior to these developments the local coal-owners prided themselves on tho freedom of the coal from gas-generating properties, but they have now to admit that this confidence has boon wrongly placed. Tho injury that is likely to arfse to trade is shown by tho fact that somo charter parties have had a new clause inserted stipulating that certain coal shall not be shipped owing to combustible qualities. Tho owners fear an extension of this stipulation, and consequent serious results to trade, and they urge tho appointment of a Roval Commission, the cost of which shall be borne equally by the Government {md the owners,
