The firemen trying for gold in the ruins ol the Masonic Hotel at Napier had a spacious tub, into which they shovelled tho cinders and ashes and then turned tho water on, keeping tho mixture stirred. The solids went to the bottom, while the lighter elements floated on to the top. An occasional assay was made of tho sediment with, it is said, generally satisfactory results. The State school at Lyell was on fire recently, and tho local paper pathetically states :—“ The grief of the childron, having to go homo for tho remainder of tho day, was very touching to behold.”
