The verdict of accidental death in the case of Frank O’Neill, whoso body was found in a disused pass in tho Waihi Company’s mine, was agreed to only by four of the jury. Two were not agreed, and tho Coroner was also dissatisfied with the verdict. Ho is now taking stops to have the matter placed beforo the Justice Department, with a view to having a Magisterial enquiry. Miss Watkin, tho missing daughter of tho Rev W. J. Watkin, is reported as having been seen in different country districts, but uo reliance is placed on the statements.

At an inquest at To Awamutu concerning tho death of a Native named Nepiu, a verdict was returned to tho eilect that deceased was accidentally killed while under the influence of liquor by falling out ot a buggy and breaking his neck. Christchurch, May 19. The boot trade dispute has been referred to the Court of Arbitration.

Mr McGowan, Commissioner of Taxes, with Mr Ilayes, accountant to tho department, met tho members of the Chamber of Commerce yostorday and discussed the question of the tax which lias been placed on consignments. The evidence disclosed a shocking stato of immorality. Complainant stated that sho went to accused’s house with a girl 11 years old on tho date of tho offence alleged to havo been committed, and admitted that sho and two other girls went to another Chinaman’s house five weeks previously. A witness, 11 years of age, admitted that she and other girls had visited five different houses occupied by Chinese. A large house owned and occupied by Mrs Amelia Morris, at Anderson’s Bay,

which has been destroyed by tire, was insured for A9OO in the Alliance oflico. New Plymouth, May 19. 11.M.5. Ringdove arrived hero about 2 o’clock to-day.

At the Harbour Board meeting to-night, Captain Ewan, late of the Union Steam Ship Company, was appointed harbourmaster. There were 10 applicants for the position, which lias a salary of A 325 a year attached to it.

A lady passing along the liver bank last night saw an object in the water and heard screams. ’Phis morning tho body of Isabella Cm t is, aged 17, a nurse-girl, was recovered from the liver. She had on several occasions threatened to drown herself.
