THE WOOL MARKET.

London, May 12. At tho wool sales competition is strong, and the best values of the series have been obtained. London, May 13. At the wool sales to-day, competition was keen and prices firm. London, May 17.

Tho total quantity of wool catalogued up to dato is 216,000 bales, of which 94,000 bales have been sold for the Homo trade, 106,000 halos for export, and 1000 for America, while 75,000 bales have been held over.

Tho sales closed with prices rather irregular, being at about the January level, but with a hardening tendency. The statistical position induces tho importers to expect a recovery in prices.

Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have received the following wool market cablegram from their London house, Messrs Sanderson, Murray and Co., dated 16th May, 1596 -.—The sales have closed with rates unchanged; 76,000 bales havo been held over.

A cablegram received from London by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company states: —Wool The sales closed firmly this day. Since close of last sales greasy merino super is par to Id per lb lower; greasy merino medium and inferior and medium greasy crossbred aro jd to Id per lb lower; washed and scoured merino super, washed merino medium and inferior, scoured merino medium and inferior, fine greasy, washed and scoured crossbred are Id per lb lower ; slipe, coarse greasy, washed and scoured crossbred, greasy merino lambs super, medium and inferior, are Jd per lb lower; medium washed and scoured crossbred are Id per lb lower; greasy crossbred lambs’ has advanced HI per lb since close of last sales. Tho total quantity sold during past sales is 199,000 bales, of which 105,000 bales have been taken for the Continent and 1000 bales for America, It is estimated that 75,000 bales have been held over for future disposal.
