Tho French authorities have a very drastic method of dealing with bookmakers on racecourses. M. Tible, a French bookmaker, was arrested on September 19th last for calling tho odds. There was found upon him a sum of .£240, which was confiscated, and on October 24th he was sentenced to 15 days’ imprisonment and a fine of 3000 f (ill 20). Ho appealed against this verdict, but tho conviction was confirmed, with costs. The meat consumed on a P. and 0. boat during an average voyage (England to Australia) amounts to 10 tons, tho poultry and game number 15,000 head, the fish run to half a ton, tho potatoes mount up to 18 tons, and the vegetables and fruit to close on 1000 pads and baskets. The tea amounts to 10001 b, coffee to 5001 b. Tho ioo stores alone cost the company about jEIO per week for each vessel afloat.
