LIFE INSURANCE SOCIAL AND LITERARY CLUB.

Tn celebration of the twenty-sixth anniI versAry of the Government Life Insurance j Department and the second anniversary | of the Government Insurance Social and ! Literary Club there was held in tho clubt room of tho Insurance Buildings a pleasant and successful entertainment, at which officers of the establishment effectively officiated. The party, which numbered, with the guests, about ICO persons, under the presidency of Mr J. 11. Richardson, tho Commissioner, included tho Hon the Premier (Mr Seddon), Mrs and the Misses Seddon, the Hon Mr Ward (tho Colonial Treasurer) and the officers of tho department and their lady friends. The programme, which embraced both musical and elocutionary efforts, giving in each instance marked satisfaction to a somewhat critical audience, and also included various original and artistic contributions of no mean order, was received with repeated rounds of applauso. At the close the Premier (the Colonial Treasurer, who is tho political head of the department, having not as yet arrived by tho late train) addressed the assemblage, expressing his entire satisfaction and that of his Government with tho successful progress of the Insurance Department and the conduct of its business, and made special allusion to tho excellent order and harmony which prevailed in tho department, and tho good agreement and concord which existed throughout its ranks and branches. In a semi jocular tone, in referring to the advantages of life insurance for individual and family benefit, ho urged on the young ladies present, as well as those absent, the propriety of their insisting that those who sought tho happiness of becoming their husbands should fully appreciate the absolute necessity of the preliminary process of insuring their lives for the welfare of their prospective families, as well as for their own peace of mind. And he pointed out that, (J course, with the State security behind it, tho Government Insurance Department was thii true colonial institution to which tho wives and mothers of households would naturally direct the attention of their husbands and sons. (Cheers.) Mr Seddon expressed the gratification of Mrs Seddon, his daughters and himself at being present at this gathering, and lie hoped

and fully believed that both the institutions itself and the club which its officers had established would, in the words of Rip Van Winkle, go on and prosper for generations yet to como. After a short adjournment for refreshment, the party engaged in dancing, which was kept up until tho chimes noted the noon of night.
