BUSINESS PREMISES ROBBED.
It was reported to tho police on Friday morning that some time during Thursday eight the office of Mr T. Young, solicitor, Featherston street, had been broken open and the sum of FSG stolen. It is alleged that three weeks ago a boy named Walter Catliro, who is in Mr Young’s employ, reported that the bunch of office keys was lost, and on Friday morning it was found that the front door of the premises had been opened by means of the proper door key, which was left in the lock, still attached to the bunch of keys which had been lost. Tho thief or thieves had then opened the strong - room, evidently by means of a key made for tho purpose, and stolen FSG from tho cash-box, which was lying on top of tho safe. On Fiiday evening Chief - Detective Campbell arrested Catliro and another boy named Frederic Needham, employed by Mr Kirkby, in connection with tho affair. The money stolen has been recovered. On April 1111 i last Mr Young’s premises were broken into and F 8 was stolen, and on that occasion tho doors wore filled with now locks.
A quantity of tobacco and cigars and a sum of F2 15s were stolen from tho shop of Yong War, Lambton quay, some time during Thursday night or Friday morning. Everything was secure on Thursday night, but on proceeding to open tho shop on Friday morning Yong War found the front door unlocked and slightly ajar. The thief or thieves had evidently effected an entrance by unlocking tho door by means of a skeleton key. The owner resides on the premises, and was not disturbed during the night. He estimates that close upon F2O worth of goods havo been taken. Last week the premises of Messrs Rhind and WagstalT, corn merchants, and Messrs J. M. Smith and Co., drapers, at Lyttelton, wore broken into, but in neither case was much taken.
