The veteran batted brilliantly, and made his runs in half an hour. With the score at 58 Jones changed ends, arid with his first hall dismissed Jack-on. Then ;t “rot” Set in, and was not checked until Ranjitsinglii appeared at the wickets. He hatted faultlessly, his cutting, driving and pulling being very fine. 11l one over he scored 13, hut ho was eventually disposed of by Jones, who made a magnificent onehanded catch in long-field. Altogether the fielding of the Australians was excellent, and Jones’ pace created a great impression. 3ho hatting of the Australians in their second innings was only moderate until Trott and Hill became associated, when a good stand was made. Tho match between the Australian Eloven and Essex County began this morning, on the Leyton ground. The County Eleven is composed of Owen, Kortrigbt, Bull, Lucas, Mead, Pickett, Carpenter, Bawbee, Russell, MoGahoy and Perry. The attendance was good, and the weather splendid, but the wicket was rather lively. . Essex won the toss, and went in. Giffen proved to he in good form with the ball, and five wickets were disposed of for 105 —a total which would have been much smaller but for a plucky stand made by McGahey and Perry. Essex showed only mediocre form at the wickets, tho exceptions being Perry (Amateur colt) and Lucas, who showed some ot his old form with tho bat. Giffen took three wickets, Trumble . four, and Jones three. McKibbin was not tried. Iho fielding of tho Australians showed improvement. Gregory playod freely, but the others showed caution, Mead’s bowling being dangerous. The cricket match Essex v. the Australians was resumed to-day. The weather was fine, hut there was only a moderate attendance of the public. Tho wicket was rather lively. The Australians, with four wickets down for 78, continued their first innings, and were all disposed of for 223. Ilill played a splendid innings for?3boforo he was howled by Mead. The other chief scores were Gregory, bowlod by Kortrigbt, 31; and Kelly, bowled by Pickett, 29. Essex then began their second innings, and when stumps were drawn for tho day, they had lost five wickets for 109, which was an advance of 4 at a similar singe of their first essay.
