There are 158 patients in the HospitalOS males and GO females. There are 21 cases of typhoid fever in the institution. No deaths have occurred from this disease in tho Hospital this year.

The Hospital Trustees decided on Tuesday that, in view of the recent loss of £lB9 from tho Hospital safe, in future all sums over £1 should be paid by cheque by tho treasurer once a month at the Hospital. A suggestion was made by the Rev H. Van Staveron that tho Trustees should personally make up the loss, subscribing £2l each. The Trustees, however, did not take the matter seriously, although .Messrs Harris, Willes'on and Danks said they were willing to pay their share. One Trustee said that the Rev Mr Staveren did not mean what he said, and was r.imply talking claptrap, while another suggested that ho was only talking "to tho papers." Mr Allen said that the new arrangement would entail a lot of extra work upon him, and he handed in his resignation. On the suggestion of the Rev 11. Van Staveren, Mr Allen agreed to withdraw his resignation until the now system had received a fair trial, in committee tho Trustees further considered the circumstances of the loss of the money from tho safe, and it was finally decided to adjourn further consideration of the matter for a fortnight. A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of S. F. Willard was held on Tuesday in tho Official Assignee's oliice. The bankrupt made a statement on oath, and the meeting was adjourned vine die.

An extensive sale of freehold landed property in the city was negotiated on Tuesday by Messrs J. H. Bethune and Co., who report having sold by private contract, on behalf of tho estate of tho lato Mr T. H. Clapham, the whole of town sections Nos. (!5 > and 031, on tho plan of the City of Wellington, adjoining the residence of .Mrs W. H. Levin, and having long frontages to Tinakori road, Park street and Grant road, in the residential part of Thorndon. There are on the land 11 buildings, including three eight-roomed and two six-roomed dwollinghouses fronting Park street, and one eight-rooino.l dwelling and four cottages fronting Grant road, and a cottage fronting Tinakori road, all occupied by tenants. At a meeting of creditors in tho estate of Joseph Aston, carpenter, last week, tho bankrupt said he was unable to make any offer. The meeting 1 was adjourned for a week to enable the Assignee to make some enquiries with regard to the mortgages of tho bankrupt's property. Mr E. B. Peirec, of the Land Mart, Palmerston North, reports the sale of 500 acres from Mr Lyell to Mr Cameron ; a Woodvillo property, Awapuni, (JO acres, from Mr Godwin to Mr Jamieson, and Palmerston North properties as f ollo\vs : Broad street, quarteracre and tight-roomed dwelling, Mr Hill to Mr Melsop; Lombard street, quarter-aero and nice dwelling, Mr Goadey to Mr eJolhy ; Cuba street, quarter acre, Mr Young to Mr Payne; and at FeiMing, one acre, Mr Wills to Mr Jackson. All tliesu properties have been sold at vendors prices and mostly for cash.

The creditors hi tho estate of Drmnmond Brothers, sawiniilers, Waikainic, met on Monday afternoon in the Official Assignee's office. Mr Tread well appeared for Mr ti. O. Smith, one of the creditors, and Air li. 0. Kirk for the petitioning creditors. One of the bankrupts, James Drummond, denied that he owed .Mr Smith £lls 12s Id. The firm had paid Mr Smith £IOO in cash, and he had taken timber of the value of -£'7s, and there wero some accounts for timber sent to Wellington. They had brought an action against Mr Smith claiming £IOOO damages. Mr Smith offered to give up the timber money and J£s for the tramway, £7O in all, on condition that a resolution ho passed that the action be not proceeded with. It was decided that Mr Smith's offer be accepted, and that no further action bo taken against him so far as tho creditors are concerned. The Assignee had some doubt as to whether ho could refuse to carry on the action, and ho adjourned tho mooting for a week.

Mrs Lahman, the popular hostess of the Metropolitan Hotel, had rather a narrow escape last week. Suffering from a severo headache, she sent for a remedy to a chemist's. Tho girl who went there returned with sal volatile in a phial, and giving it Mrs Lahman, said "This is the dose." Whereupon Mrs Lahman, under a misapprehension as to the proper quantity, took half the contents of the phial. Dr James was at once called in, and administered tho proper remodies, and Mrs Lahman is now recovering.
