Dukkdin, May 12. j At a meeting of the Otago Institute to-1 night Professor Shand read a paper on the Rontgen rays, and a shadow picture ot a . frog taken by Mr A. Hamilton was shown. Howard lias been convicted on two charges of having carried on slygrog selling at Karioi on 10th February. On the first charge he has been fined £2», and ho has been sentenced to three months imprisonment on the second, Judge Kettle remarking that the Court was determined to put down the traffic. On the application of counsel the Magistrate agreed to reconsider his decision in the second case. The Probation Officer and the police are to report on the character of the accused. At the Police Court to-day, Thomas Wood, rate collector for the borough, was committed for trial on several charges of embezzling rate moneys of the borough.
