THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.

Brisbane, May 12.

Captain Bird, of tho s.s. Miowera, is negotiating with the Government on liehalf of Messrs Hnddart, Parker and Co., to extend the Vancouver service to Queensland. If sufficient inducement is offered, Brisbane will be made the first port of call and the last of departure. Captain Bird haspresented two proposals — one for a ill days'.service with two steamers, and the ether for a three-weekly with three vessels.

The company is anxious to extend its service to Queensland, but Captain Bird says that if the Government is not willing to meet him it will most likely arrange to have a New Zealand port of call. Ho thinks the Queensland trade is preferable, because it is more in the line of route than New Zealand.

It is understood that Captain Bird asks not less than £IO,OOO for seven years. The Cabinet is believed to be favourable, but has not decided what amount of subsidy to give.
