At a meeting of the Hospital Board today, Dr Walter Fox was appointed house surgeon, Dr Crosbie assistant-houso surgeon, and Dr Diamond was elected to fill the vacancy on the honorary medical staff caused by the resignation of Dr Deamcr. The Hospital Board to-day passed a resolution exonerating the honorary medical staff from certain charges made by the Evening News. A man named Uedingfield has been arrested at Makotuku on a curious charge. It is alleged that he wrote a letter to a settler's daughter threatening bodily

violence if she did not supply him with money or tobacco, which was to be loft at a certain place. A trap was laid for him, resulting in his arrest. Dunedin, May 6.

There was a prolonged and at times lively special meeting of tho Westport Coal Company this afternoon to consider a series of resolutions proposed by some shareholders who objected to what was done at the last annnal meeting. The first motion was to rescind the resolution increasing the directors' fees to .£650 per annum. This was lost by 5863 votes to 3232. A motion that the number of directors be reduced was withdrawn, on the assurance of the chairman that tho matter would be considered. As the first motion was defeated, No. 3 was not moved.

No. 4, that it be a recommendation to the directors that the Melbourne board of directors be abolished as soon as convenient, was carried on the voices. No. 5, to thoeffect that in future balancesheets ' the items of "management," " charges," " directors' fees," be separately stated under distinct headings, was lost, the voting on No. 1 being accepted on this.

When the steamer Takapuna was coming up the Manukau Harbour on Saturday night, she got a little too near the edge of the channel and grounded. An attempt to float her off proved unsuccessful. The Gairloeh last night made an attempt to tow her oil' into the channel, but it proved unsuccessful. The steamer came off tho bank to-night at high water, and leaves to-morrow morning at 9 o'clock for New Plymouth and Wellington. Auckland, May 11.

A fracas occurred in Queen street on Saturday evening between Mr G. 11. Powley, a well-known shirt manufacturer, and Mr W. J. Goddis, one of the proprietors of the Observer newspaper. Powley, deeming himself aggrieved at a paragraph which had appeared in the Observer, took his stick and struck Gaddis about the shoulders, and the latter in protecting himself got struck on tho hands, and his nose also bled. Mr J. M. Geddis, with his stick cr umbrella,, warded off a blow from his brother, and some articles on a stand outside Goodsou's fancy shop got smashed. It is understood that tho affair will be ventilated by legal proceedings. A young man named Harry Vincent Martin, an engraver, was arrested on Saturday night on a charge of shooting a young lady, Miss Edith Williams, with intent to kill. Martin, who has of late developed eccentric tendencies, was seen at his room upstairs gesticulating, and shortly afterwards Miss Williams was shot in the calf of the leg. The defence is that the shooting was accidental. Martin is said to be well connected, and to have a brother residing in Dunedin. Ash burton, May 11. A very satisfactory land sale was held on Sat unlay, over 1000 acres of Mr Chinees' farm, Methveu, being sold at auction. The property, divided into 10 farms, fetched an average of .£1.3 per acre. It was the best land sale held for many years in the district. Westport, May 11.

The charge against S. Green of having stabbed Scoble has been dismissed. The latter has disappeared, and the police have so far failed to discover his whereabouts. Hawera, May 7.

A telegram to the Star states that the Eltham Pail way Station was broken open early this morning and looted. The thieves entered by forcing the door. The safe was then blown open with some explosive, ami .ill):) in cash was stolen. At 7 a.m. the empty cash-box was found, blown open, and this was the first known of tho robbery, though it is reported that about 2 a.m. a noise was heard, which is now supposed to have been an explosion. Continuous rain has caused the hanks ol the Tutaenui to overflow, and there is every prospect of a heavy flood. The intersection of Broadway and High streets is now submerged, the stormwater coming down rapidly, and rain is still falling. Mastkktun, May 7.

The report of tho directors of tho Trustees, Executors and Agency Company recommends that after adding £'soo to the reserve fund, which will then stand at £2OOO, a dividend at the rate of 7 per cent, be paid, and that the balance of 1471 8s 8d be carried forward.
