THE PRESS ASSOCIATION.
" Tho action of the directors of tho Press Association in demanding an entrance fee of MOO for the Standard is being taken up in other quartors, and the act ion of the chairman of directors is condemned on all hands. If it bo true, and we have no reason to doubt it, that tho Association offered to admit a daily paper in a town larger than Hastings for the sum of £SO, though another daily papor in the town was already in tho Association, then wo maintain we are justly entitled to an explanation from tho directors as to the real reason of us being asked to contribute ten times that amount. We aro thankful for the expression of sympathy wo have received from other journals, all, by the way, members of the Association, and a few quotations from their remarks may not bo out of place."—Hastings Standard. [There can be no doubt that tho proceeding referred to above was a highhanded one, and it will be interesting to notice what explanation tho chairman of the board of directors, Mr Kuowles, proprietor of the Napier Telegraph, will make of his very peculiar conduct in this matter. It is another instance of the danger of placing power in the hands of narrowminded men, who are swayed not by a sense of justice and manly fair-play, but by their cupidity or political bigotry. There are other questions, as well as this one, which will como before the annual meeting of tho Association, bearing on the mismanagement and scandalous partisanship of the United Press during the past year. Wo sympathise with the enterprising young proprietors of our Hastings contemporary, and wish them every success in spite of tho mean and contemptible opposition thoy havo met with.—Ed. N.Z, Mail.]
