LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Singles Championship matches were begun at Sydney on Tuesday. Parker (New" Zealand) beat Curtis (tho Sydney University representative) by three sets to one.

Colquln-un (Sydney) beats Collins (New Zealand) by three sets to one.

Dr Hughes (-ydney, who also holds tho Queensland championship) beat Gore (New Zealand) by three sets to love.

Contrary to expectation, the first round of the ladies' singles was also begun on Tuesday.

Miss Nuunclcy (New Zealand) beat Miss Gift by two sets to one. Tho latter, however, suffered under a disadvantage, having injured Inn- ankleHovorely iu a previous game. The New Zealand representative was evidently suffering from the effects of the voyage to Sydney, and scarcely played up to her usual form.

The New Zealand representatives have arranged to play a team match against New South Wales next Monday.

The annual dance and presentation of trophies in connection with the I'efoiio Lawn IVimis Chi!', in the Oddfellows' Hall, was most successful. The hall and supper ro;au were decorated artistically with flags and evergreens by the ladies' committee, and presented a bright and pleasing appearance. Dr Newman, president of the Club, presided. The presentation of prizes was made by Mrs J. McGowan as follows :-Combined Doubles Handicap (Mr C. Trevethick's trophy), silver teapot—Miss B. Wolff. Ladies' Doubles Handicap, gold brooches—Won by Misses B. Wolff and Home. Men's Doubles Handicap, silver napkin ring and sovereign ease-Won by Messrs F. J. Parson and J. Hunter. Men's Singles Handicap, silver-mounted brushes (Dr Newman's trophy)-Won by Mr J. Burns; second prize won by Mr E. B. Jones. Combined Doubles Handicap, silver teapot (Mr It. Mothes'trophy) and silver sovereign caseWon by Mrs Fred Parson and Mr li. C. Kirk. Ladies' Singles Maiden Handicap, set of afternoon teaspoons (Mr Grady's trophy)— Won by Mrs Wilkinson.
