"Wc have received from thoanthor, Mr K. Trr rr ear, a copy of his dictionary of the Paumolus*. 'this book is one of the efforts made by Mr Trcgoar to put on record some of the languages of the fc'outli Seas before the natives become extinct. These efforts m the cause of science are worthy of all praiso. The Paumctu Group consists of some 78 islands lying about 120 miles cast of Tahiti. The visits of shivers and emigration to other islands have almost depopulated this archipelago, only about 3500 of these bravo and hardy people being now in existence. The preface tells us that the language of the Panraotus is of especial interest, because, although most of the words are pure Polynesian or Maori, there is an alloy of some foreign tongue not as yet recognised as bclotiging to any known dialect of Oceania.
