NELSON JOCKEY CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING.

BY r TE WHIT!

Tho above Club were favoured with real Nel coil weather. The attendance was not up to expectations, but- speculation was extremely brisk, Wil l- going through tho totalisator during the two days. Some splendid finishes were witnessed, and the handicapper, Mr J. E. llenry, came in for hearty congratulations. Tho course was exceedingly heavy, and several horses were quite unable to show their true form on account thereof, notably Flying Shot, Leda and Sea Serpent. Mr F. Martin had great luck in winning the Cup with Review, as, had Swift been ridden with more judgment, slm could not have lost this event. Prince Cole started favourite, but could only manage to get third. Freeborn proved that ho is a out above the average hurdler by easily disposing of the opposition on the first day, and conceding nearly a stone and running a dead heat with Dromedary on the second day. Old Cheque secured the Trial Stakes, beating the Cup winner Review and Mr llandon’s Flying Shot. In the Hack Knee, Sing Song won easily, Swordfish hanging at the post, but this did not alter the result. Clyde had an easy win in the Trot, and Seabreeze easily appropriated the Grand Stand Handicap, with Tippler and Sea Serpent in tho two places. On tho second day Freeborn and Dromedary ran a dead heat, and as tho connections of tho former doclinod to run off, Dromedary cantered over the course and secured tho 30 sovs. It is stated that Freeborn injured his stifle in tho race and his party did not care to risk a knock out by racing him again. 'Swift had an easy victory in tho Richmond lark Stakes, with King’s Own and Cheque in the places. 11l the Hack Handicap Swordfish just managed to carry his fist 81 b home in front of Princess, who was unfortunate enough to run second in both hack events. Sing Song was a good third. In the All Aged Stakes tho stable companions Cheque and Sea Breeze were both competitors, tho stable having their dollars rm Sea Breeze, but Cheque could not be held “slow” enough, and romped home, paying the good dividend of £i 13s, which almost explains itself. Tippler had a soft thing in the Farewell, and invietus lamb'd t ho trot, paying £3 10s.

The club’s 01-icials worked unusually hard to make the meeting a success and thoroughly deserved the result which was attained.
