SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.

The R.M.S. Alameda, from San Francisco, arrived at Auckland on Saturday. Passengers : Mosdaiues Garden (and child) and Roberts, Drs McKenzie and Parker, Messrs Andrew, Atkinson, Merrick, Foster, Garden, Jansen, Lonargan, Nathan, Nolan, Roberts, Pierce and Tarbut, and live in tho steerage. The Alameda was delayed on her voyage by one of her boiler tubes giving way about two days boforo she reached Apia. The day previous to the island of Upolu being sighted, a cylinder of ammonia gas among the cargo in tho forehold exploded, and the fumes arising therefrom completely prostrated some of the men in the forecastle. Fortunately, they were rescued in time, but arc even now suffering from the effects of asphyxiation. On Tuesd iy morning last, at 5.30 o’clock, a steam pipe burst, and a compartment was filled with steam, causing consternation amongst the passengers who were mostly m their bunks. age passengers had a narrow escape tram scalding. Tho accident cleared the steerage of its inhabitants, all making a record ascent of the gangway. No damage was done, fortunately, except the saturating of the bedding by condensed steam. The promptitude of tho steerage steward (Mr II ickci.l) and the smartness of one of the passengers in getting the steam shut off were greatly commended.

Tho Mahinapua, with tho Wellington and Southern portion of the San Francisco mail, left Unchunga at noon on Saturday, and arrived in Wellington at ten minutes past 12 on Monday morning. The mail for the South was taken on by the Omepero, which left shortly after 2 o’clock.

THE UNITED STATES SENATE TO INCREASE THE SUBSIDY. News by the San Francisco mail shows that the United States Senate lias resolved to increase the subsidy to the Oceanic Steamship Company by 80,000 dollars for the steamers sailing from San Francisco to New Zealand, via Honolulu, provided that this, with the sum now paid, does not exceed two dollars per mile.
