SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

TH K TERRACE. There was an unusually large attendance on .Monday at the annual meeting oi householders for the election of the Terrace School Committee. The annual report of the committee, read by the secretary (Mr ,1. F. Evans) and adopted, showed that the number on the toll is now over GOO, as against 572 last year. During the last year the work of the school had proceeded very smoothly. Out of 50 scholarships offered by tho Technical School, 10 wore won by the school’s pupils, while of the 10 primary scholarships offered by the Education Board three fell to the lerrseo School,and out ol’ the first 20 names on the list eight were those of Terrace School pupils. The following were nominated to serve on the committee : Kev 11. Van Staveron, Messrs J. E. Evans, G. Leslie, G. Mee, T. Pringle, W. G. ltuncie, J. Scott. D. Wighton, W. E. Woods, J. S. Jameson, F. do J. Clore, W. C. Fitz Gerald and Miss E. Greenwood. A ballot resulted as lollows : —Elected Messrs Leslie, 31; Meo, 31; AVighton, 31; Evans, 29; Euricie, 27 ; Miss Greenwood, 20; Messrs Fitz Gerald, 25; Clerc, 25; Jameson, 21. Not elected—Messrs Woods, 19; Pringle, 10; Scott, 10 ; Eev 11. Van Staveron, 15. A vote of thanks was given to the Rev 11. Van Staveren (tho retiring chairman of the committee), who, in replying, said ho considered this was simply a party trial, and he felt in no way dejected by the result. A vote of thanks was also given to tho retiring committee. At a meeting of the new committee, Mr George Moo was elected chairman, and Mr Evans re-olceted secretary.

THORNDON. At the Thorudon meeting, the abstract of accounts showed the receipts to bo £8 'i (>s Id, and the expenditure A7i) Os Sd, leaving a credit balance of £9 5s sd. The annual report was adopted. The following wero elected the committee for the ensuing term Messrs I). Archibald, C. T. Bonzoui, J. Clark, W. T. Garratt, A. Koch, J. Riddick, C. T. Richardson. J. Rose and M. Murdoch. in a discussion which took place regarding tho Irish Text-book, the chairman expressed himself as in favour of religious instruction by tho clergy, provided it was conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, but that the committee had no power to entertain any request that would conflict with the statute. A vote of thanks was given to the committee. At a meeting of the incoming committee, Mr A. Koch was unanimously re-elected chairman, and Mr 0. T. Benzoin secretary and treasurer. or.VUE quay. I At the meeting of Clyde quay householders, j the headmaster's report, read by the secroI tary (Mr J. C. .Swallow), stated that at the present time there was a larger number of children upon the school’s books than thero had been before, viz., 853, and if all tho children had presented themselves at any one time tho school would have boon unable to accommodate them. Tho committee’s report mentionol the good work done by the cookery Miss established with the assistance of Mrs Grundy. Fifty copies of tho New Zealand School Header had been procured for the nso of tho upper standards. The book had been strongly recommended by tho Board, and the committee believed it would prove veiy useful to scholars. Tho balance-sheet stated that thero was a balance in the hank of £ll Ills lid. The reports and balance-sheet were adopted. A householder asked if the candidates for the committee could bo asked for their opinion on the Bible in schools question f The Chairman ruled this out ol order, as it would he introducing irrelevant matter. Some discussion took place on the Chairman’s ruling, and eventually a vote was taken, and the majority decided that the question should not bo asked. The following were elected the committee : Messrs D. Robertson, IV. Cable, D. McLean. C. Stewart, E. Hurlston, F, Townsend, 11. J. White, C. M. Luke and J. C. Swallow. Subsequently Mr Robertson was re-elected chairman and Mr Swallow secretary. NEWTOWN. The annual report read at tho Newtown meeting Mated that the new school, a comfortable and commodious building, would probably be completed in a month or two. Owing to the flooded state of the schoolground last July, certain repairs had been necessary. There would be trouble from this .source until tho ground was raised to the level of Mein street. Complaints having been made to the committee about the undue use of tho cane by the subordinate teachers, an enquiry was } held, with the result that letters were sent to tho teachers concerned staling that in two cases it was believed the punishment was accidental, and in that of two others it had been too severe, and that if the committee heard any further complaints they would report the teachers complained of to the Board. Since then the children had been treated with greater kindness and forbearance. The inspector’s report showed that tho school was in a satisfactory condition, although tho percentage of passes was not quite as high as other schools, which would ho explained by the overcrowded stateof tho Newtown schools.. Messrs Keene anil Tyson, two of the candidates, objected to the Bible in the schools. Mr J. Mann thought, in tho absence of agreement between the ministers of religion on the subject, it would not be wise to move in this direction. Mr VV. S. Cobham maintained that the system of education was not complete without the Bible, and ho should do all in his power, if elected, to get the Word of God introduced nto the schools. The following wero elected .- —Messrs W. S. Cobham, J. Mann, A. J. McEldowney, R. Keene, AV. E. Tyson, J. J. Welm, G. Fairchild, E. Thornton and A. Wilson. A vote of thanks was given to the retiring committee. It was afterwards suggested that there was some irregularity in the scrutiny, and it was decided to send tho ballot papers to the Education Boanl. LOWER 11CTT. The election of tho Mount Cook Committee I resultid as follows Messrs J. Ferguson, A. Maodougall, F. Wills, T. M. C. Front, D. Fry do. TE ARC. i The outgoing committee in their annual report stated that the schools were in a very satisfactory condition. ’1 110 committee was of opinion that _ increased accommodation should ho provided. At a meeting of the committee Mr J. Keith was elected chairman and Mr J. Lankshear secretary. HASTINGS. The following have been re-elected tho School Committee :—Captain Russell, Messrs A. A. George, Maddison, Tong, Fritcldey, McQuillan, Goldsmith, Morgan and Cock. Messrs 11. H. Hunt and K. AVebb were tho other candidates. NAPIER. The following School Committees have been elected; Napier. —Messrs Edwards, Gilbcrd, Garner, Fielder, Hall, AValtcr, Barrett, Burley, Mrs 11 egg. Port Ahuriiu. —Messrs C. Hoad, Trask, Essex, Saunders, Muir, Cogs will, Forne,. McCarthy, McCoomb.
