BOARD OF CONCILIATION.

The adjourned meeting of tho Board of Conciliation for the AYellingtou district for tho purposo of electing a chairman was held on Friday afternoon, when thero were present Messrs J. Young, C. Haslam, D. P. Fisher and IT. C. Jones.

Mr J. Young, who was in the chair, expressed the opinion, in reply to Mr Fisher, that any action they might take could not bo invalidated even supposing Mr H. C. Jones’ election was declared tc be illegal. They would therefore bo quite justified in proceeding with the election of a chairman.

Mr W. A. Hawkins (clerk of awards) informed the Court that there was no business before the meeting. The Chairman remarked it was quite competent for Mr Hawkins to consult tho law officers of the Crown, although for his part he was of opinion they could go on with the election of a chairman.

Mr Hawkins said his procedure would be to communicate with tho Registrar of Friendly Societies. On tho motion of Mr Fisher, seconded by Mr Haslam, tho clerk was requested to consult tho law officers of the Crown on the question of whether they were justified in proceeding with tho election of a chairman without waiting for the decision of tho Supremo Court as to Mr Jones’ election. The Court then adjourned for a week. The action in tho Supreme Court referred to above is being taken by Mr 11. Warner, one of the candidates for election on the Board, who contends that Mr A. 11. Hindmarsh was instructed by tho Seamen’s Union to vote for him, but that instead of obeying those instructions ho voted for Mr Jono3, who received nine votes, while Mr Warner only received eight vote.s. He therefore requests that a writ of mandamus bo issued, calling upon tiio Clerk of Award to record the vote of tho Seamen’s Dniou in his favour, and to declare him elected a member of the Board, and to declare Mr Jones’ election null and void.
