Tho Dervishes before their defeat by Major Sydney entangled Fenwick’s scouts in the bush, and speared many of them. Fenwick’s Egyptian cavalry defended the hill all night, and repulsed four assaults.

Great disorder is rampant among Osman Digna’s troops, and since the fighting commenced they have been almost without food. Cairo, April 23. King Mendel;, in the peace negotiations with Italy, offered to agree to fix the Merab River as the frontier, but insisted on the Italian protectorate over Abyssinia being abandoned. The Premier, the Marquis di Rudini, agreed to this on condition that tho prisoners were released and Menelok undertook to refuse to allow any other Power to assume a protectorate. Menclek, however, declined these conditions.
