LIGHT-WEIGHT GOODS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —With further reference to the above subject, I am of firm opinion that “tho confiding householder” is fully able to study bis own interest. Fourteen ounce candles aro retailed at fully id per packet under tire IGoz article, so the confidence of tho householder is not so entirely misplaced after all. A certain section of the community is always clamouring for cheaper prices, and to fill their wants any retailer who caters for this trade is bound in self-defence to stock “ light-weight ” articles. If an Act were passed actually forbidding tho importation of short-weight packets, it would, I believe, bo hailed with delight both by the retailer and the foreign manufacturer of candles. Tho latter reaps no benefit from tins socalled deception, lie being paid by actual weight supplied, and not- by the packet. So giving honest weight in each packet would bo money in bis pocket, inasmuch as there would be a slight saving in cost of labels and wrapping. If such a Bill was brought in, attention might also be given to all articles manufactured within tho Colony.—l am, Ac., Observer. Wellington, 22nd April, 1895. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Your drawing attention to the question of short weight has earned for you the gratitude of all classes of the community, especially the poorer of our citizens. I would draw your attention to

a common practice amongst butter vendors. For instance, I saw ticketed in a window "This hatter for Bd." [ sampled it, was satisfied, bought what I thought was a pound weight, hut my suspicions were aroused. I had it weighed, when I found that 1 had soz short of a pound of butter. F am assured that this is a common practice. —I am, itc. Fum, Wbiumt.
