PRESENTATIONS.

A largely-attended meeting of the committee of the Bakers’ Union was held in the Queen’s Chambers on Monday afternoon —Mr G. T. Harris (vice-president) in the chair —to present Mr Grantham, late secretary of the Union, with a testimonial prior to his departure for Marten, where he intends to start in business for himself. Mr Harris assured Mr Grantham that he had the good wishes of all the members of the Union for his success, and presented him with a silver cruet stand, which bore the following inscription:—“Presented to W. E. Grantham by tho Wellington Operative Bakers’ Union, on his retirement from the olfi.ce of secretary.” Those present then adjourned to the Post Olfico Hotel, where Air Grantham’s health was enthusiastically toasted.

Constable Patton, who for some years past has filled the position of watch-house-keeper at the Central Police Station, Lambton quay, left on Alonday to take charge of the Upper Hutt district, in place of Constable McKinnon, who has been transferred to Wellington. Previous to his departure Constable Patton was presented with a handsome case of pipes by several of tho constables,

as a token of esteem. The presentation was made by Constable Murphy, who referred to the kindly feelings which had always prevailed between the recipient and the other members of the force for many years past, and wished him good luck and long- life in his new sphere of labour. Constable Patton suitably replied, and expressed his regret at leaving those with whom he had worked so well in the past.
