Many of the inhabitants of Sydney (says the Sydney Morning- Herald) seem to be under the impression that the step taken by the authorities a few months ago of closing- the " tote " shop 3 has done mucli towards minimising- gambling, which is admitted on all sides to be one of the most serious of our social evils. Unhappily the facts do not bear out this opinion. Shutting up the "tote" shops has done very little towards the removal of the evil. It has only resulted in the opening of several sly " totes " in various parts of the city, each of which seems to do considerable business, and posseses probably more clients than ever any one of the places that formerly carried on this system of gambling publicly could boast of haying. A visit recently paid to some of the Chinese quarters seems to show very clearly that the closing of the " totes " has had the effect of largely increasing the European patronage of the Chinese lottery called " pak-ak-pu," which, although said to be a fair enough lottery, has certainly nothing to recommend it that the " totalisator " has not in that regard, while its general surroundings are repulsive in the extreme. Goulburn street, between Pitt and George streets, seems at present to be the main resort and abiding place'of " pak-ah-pu " players, mainly because from early afternoon till close to midnight they are almost continually occupied by a motley throng of Europeans and Chinese 3 while the legitimate stores have

only the ordinary amount of patronage to be expected by vendors of the particular classes of goods they keep on their shelves.

Secretaries of racing clubs are reminded that illustrated cards and programmes can be printed at the New Zealand Times Office at two hours' notice. Customers will find it the cheapest printing in the Colony.
